The Internet Effect Syndrome (TIES)

The Internet Effect Syndrome: The internet has re-defined the social structures. It unites people from afar, but it alienates from close proximity. It is changing the structure of society from conglomerates (families, friends and groups) to individual associations.
Before the internet: families used to gather to watch TV, play board games, visit family members, go to the movies; children built groups which provided entertainment activities and social interactions; adults frequented locations to gather in groups like bars, discos, churches, and share common interests in groups.
After the internet: each family member (children or adults) has a device to look at their PERSONAL emails, text messages, video conferencing, blogs.
The interaction method a society chooses is what will define the rules of engagement of it's members. Before the internet we chose to gather in groups and this is how people met their life companions, their friends, their co-workers, their rivals, etc. Now we "meet" through monitors and phone screens. The face-to-face aspect is lost; the sit down and let's talk is lost; and because of this the social interaction skills of people are gone. Our youth has lost the ability to interact in groups. Many are forced to attend school with no communication skills. Those are the ones we see on the news. We also see them struggling when they are forced to face the adult responsibility to find a job. This requires the skill of social interaction which was never acquired resulting in great stress. Those who can adapt are successful and go on in their lives to pursue their careers.
Society has changed and adapted to this new trends. We see more and more jobs that don't require your presence in the office but that can be done from your home. Today we see a war between TV networks, cable companies, and internet services (like Netflix, HULU, and others) trying to define how to bring the entertainment to the audience. Before internet we had to be home at an specific time to be able to watch our favorite show, and now we have different alternatives which allow us to do other activities and watch our favorite shows at our convenience.
Societies are prone to change and this change is directly co-related with the news method used at the time. When the invention of TV came it changed our society drastically. Now the internet have brought the next level of change. It is allowing a global reach that we never experienced before. It's here and we need to adapt if we are to be successful in it. For good or bad "The Internet Effect Syndrome" will affect all of us so we better get prepared to handle it intelligently.
