sAilcAt out of comission for a little while

Post by sAilcAt »

I came home to blinking clocks and a dead computer. Power surge of some sort has knocked out my primary PC so I am not going to be gaming for a little bit. I hope it is just the power supply but hard to tell at this point.

Anyways, I will be on as soon as I get get my rig running.

cheers!

fingers crossed it is just the PSU - id recommend buying a Power Surge protected extension lead to run your PC from to protect it happening again in future

Most modern motherboards have surge protectors built into them so the likely hood of it damaging any of the other components should be minimal

I run separate UPSs (Uninterruptible Power Supply), one for gaming PC and another for cable modem and router.

Hope you're back on soon, and nothing to bad, something simple and cheap to fix.

Thanks guys....

I need to take a multimeter to it to confirm that it is the PSU and then ordering a replacement is not a big deal... it is just taking the thing down, pulling off the back, removing all the connections. It is all hidden behind the MB so not easy to get to without pulling everything down.

But... what do ya do. first world problems and if it is just the PSU then it could have been a lot worse.

As for power surge stuff. I have it plugged into one. And a fairly decent quality one too so I am not sure what went wrong or if it is just a few years worth of dust buildup and a naught spark. Tomorrow I will pick up a 9v for my multimeter and start probing.

I will be back on... an no doubt a little rusty so be gentle.

APC provides insurance for equipment protected by their surge protectors, not too sure how you get paid though.
